The layman Ho asked Basho, “If all things return to the One, to what does the One return?”

Basho said, “I will tell you as soon as you have swallowed up all the waters of the West River in one gulp.”

Ho said, “I already have swallowed up all the waters of the West River in one gulp!”

Basho replied, “Then I have already answered your question.”
