My direct experience: Children know fear. Brand new babies know fear. They startle at noises and don’t like the dark long before anyone has told them stories of the “Boogie Man.” As children grow up they learn to be afraid of more. And many boys learn that growing up to be a man requires hiding their fear and lying about it.
